I came across this post about telling other people about the future you want. and I was compelled by her argument even though it seems dangerously close to the type of aspirational/self-help advice I hate. Her advice, "You can't manifest what you don't share." touches on a point Alan Moore makes about his type of magic. I can't find the interview in question but he claims (sarcastically) that he's a wizard because his ideas have changed the world around him. Go read the link! She makes her point much much better than I can.
Here's my list:
- I want more people to use linux - it's better than the alternatives and the more people that use it, the better it will get.
- I want more bike and rail infrastructure. The peninsula is already pretty nice. It would be a paradise if we could banish cars.
- I never want to see another commercial or ad.
- I want enough money to be able to buy a house in my area without significant debt.
- I want to install solar cells on my roof.
- I want a light and convertible laptop that ships with linux.
- I want an electric vehicle charging dock at my apartment complex.
- I want to see more of the world.
- I want my apartment walls to be a different color than beige.
- I want to make more art.
- I want to live in an animatronic haunted victorian house.
- I want people to remove our corrupt and dangerous president from the white house (and all the politicians that enable him).
- I want the government to stop subsidizing the oil industry and commit to preventing more climate change.
- I want universal healthcare.
- I want a revised copyright system.
- I want to see a more progressive tax to address income inequality.
- I want people to stop watching the news.
- I want a law making the collection of personal data a liability.
- I want people to recognize the propaganda coming from mainstream media and large tech companies.
- I want to buy toothpaste in bulk.
- I want to hang out with people that are smarter than me.
- I want to publish a book and make some passive income.
- I want figure out how to access the music system on linux.
- I want to figure out rasterization within rust.
- I want to figure out mesh networking with batmand.
- I want a cell phone with a good camera and software that won't abuse me.
- I want a cell phone in the form factor of a pocket watch.
- I want to learn more about and apply machine learning to my own data.
- I want to try VR.
- I want to get back into surfing.
- I want the time and energy to climb after work.
- I wish I didn't have to work to live.
- I want all my friends to be happy and to see them more.
- I want an ebook reader that doesn't use DRM or require an account.
- I want a laser printer that works with linux, without DRM, that doesn't dial home.
- I want a 3D printer, plotter, and cnc machine.
- I want a faster internet connection and to never have to interact with comcast ever again.
- I want to expand my iota network.
- I want the option to buy stuff without packaging.
- I want to watch rocket launches without hooting cheerleaders.
